Scaling Creativity at Christmas: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Freedom House

At Freedom House Church, creativity isn’t an afterthought—it’s part of our DNA. I’ve had the privilege of serving as our Production Director, and one of the most rewarding (and complex) seasons we plan for each year is Christmas.

Our team starts dreaming early—February early—because we know that time is the best gift we can give ourselves to plan well, scale smart, and create experiences that move people. That’s especially true for a multi-site church like ours, where no two campuses are the same.

In 2022, we leaned into a fully immersive, narrative-driven Christmas experience. From a narrator tying the whole service together, to a kids’ storybook motif brought to life through music, video, and special effects—we aimed to point people to the hope of Jesus in the middle of the holiday chaos.

We featured everything from the Grinch and Trans-Siberian Orchestra to Phil Wickham and Israel Houghton—balancing fun and reverence in a high-energy, theatrical package. The challenge? Scaling it across three very different campuses.

Instead of asking our smaller locations to match the scale of our broadcast campus, we flipped the script. We asked, what does excellence look like in each unique space? Windows, platform size, and budgets all factored into our strategy. Creativity isn’t limited by constraints—it thrives inside them.

This year, we’re taking those lessons even further. More intentional planning. More location-specific thinking. And ultimately, more consistency in the guest experience—without expecting “one-size-fits-all” to work.
